Today I want to introduce you to my main character, Camilla. The idea of Camilla is really what got me interested in writing this series. I had an image of her inside my head years and years ago when I was just a teenager. I pictured a strong, outgoing, feisty girl as my leading lady. In The Sacrifice of One, eventually Camilla will rise to that persona, but at the beginning she’s anything but that.
At the opening of The Sacrifice of One, Camilla has no spark. She’s a cog in the Warwick machine. She’s downtrodden and frankly who wouldn’t be? She has to work every day at the national farm while being treated like an animal. Any little bit of money she does make goes straight to her drunken father. Camilla’s a slave, but she barely knows it.
Camilla’s shift begins when she finds out that her brother, Tuor, is being hunted down for a murder he didn’t commit. Suddenly Camilla is thrust into a chase to save her brother. Without even knowing it, she breaks from her shell and is unable to stand for the injustice in Bear Gap any longer. At the beginning of the book, Camilla would barely put a toe out of line, but by the end, she’s wielding a bow and arrow and burning down buildings. Yowza!
Despite her heroism, Camilla still has her issues. Once her eyes are opened to the injustice around her, rage starts to bubble up in the pit of her stomach. She’ll struggle with anger and bitterness, but use it as a fuel to fight against the tyrannical Warwick. She’s hot tempered and impulsive. Camilla frequently speaks without thinking which gets her into trouble.
Camilla also doesn’t trust people easily, so if you manage to get on her good side, it’s no small accomplishment. She doesn’t have a lot of friends, but the ones she does have, Camilla would die for.
The timid farm girl that we see at the opening of this series quickly morphs into a force strong enough to take on Quinten Warwick himself, but you’ll have to stick around for a few books to see that. 😉
Camilla is a character I LOVE to write. She tends to steal the screen and I can always depend on her to jump into action and say the thing that everyone else is too nervous to say.Â
